Detmold ist eine Stadt in der Region Ostwestfalen-Lippe (OWL) im Land Nordrhein-Westfalen. Mit ungefähr 73.000 Einwohnern ist sie die größte Stadt im Kreis Lippe und verwaltungstechnisch eine Große Mittelstadt. Von 1468 bis 1918 war Detmold die Residenzstadt der Herren, Grafen und Fürsten zur Lippe, danach bis 1947 Hauptstadt des Freistaats Lippe beziehungsweise des Landes Lippe, welches dann in das neue Bundesland Nordrhein-Westfalen eingegliedert wurde. Seitdem ist die Stadt auch Sitz der neu gegründeten Bezirksregierung Detmold. Von 1932 bis 1972 war Detmold Sitz des Kreises Detmold und danach des Kreises Lippe, der aus der Zusammenlegung des Kreises Detmold mit dem Kreis Lemgo hervorgegangen war.
