Treasury Note

An 1890 Treasury Note in the denomination of $1, depicting Edwin Stanton on the obverse. This type of representative money was issued by the United States government to individuals selling silver bullion to the Treasury, and was redeemable in either gold or silver coin. The 1890 series is distinguished by its ornate background, intended to impede counterfeiting.
