Für Europa erlangte die Kartoffel die größte Bedeutung. In Italien erhielt die Kartoffel wegen ihrer Ähnlich­keit mit Trüffeln den Namen Taratho­pholi. Um 1800 waren in Deutsch­land die abge­leiteten Wörter Tartuffeln oder Artoffel üblich, woraus sich das Wort Kartoffel ent­wickelte. Die dem preußi­schen König Friedrich II. zuge­schriebene Maßnahme, Kartoffel­äcker von Soldaten bewachen zu lassen, um so den Anschein einer besonders wertvollen Feldfrucht zu erwecken, ist wahr­scheinlich eher mit dem franzö­sischen Agronomen Antoine Parmentier in Verbindung zu bringen. In jedem Fall nahm die Bedeutung des Kartoffel­anbaus in Europa im 19. Die König-Otto-Tropfsteinhöhle ist eine Tropfstein­höhle bei Velburg, südöstlich von Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz. Die Höhle gilt als eine der schönsten Tropfstein­höhlen Deutsch­lands und hat eine Gesamt­länge von 450 Metern, wobei 270 Meter in einer 30- bis 40-minütigen Führung begehbar sind. Entdeckt wurde die Höhle durch den Schäfer Peter Federl am 30. September 1895, am Namenstag des Bayern­königs Otto, daher der Name. Am 2. Dezember 1972 wurde durch zwei Fürther Höhlen­forscher der Forschungs­gruppe Höhle und Karst Franken ein weiterer Höhlenteil entdeckt. Auf Grund des Datums der Entdeckung wurde dieser Advent­halle genannt. Diese wurde zu ihrer Erschlie­ßung mit der König-Otto-Höhle verbunden und so allgemein zugänglich.
